Commonly Asked Questions and Answers about obtaining Continuing Education Course Approval in California

What are the California CEU Requirements for PT and PTAs?
All California licensed PT and PTAs are required to obtain 30 contact hours of continuing education during the two-year renewal period. Coursework must be related to the practice of Physical Therapy. The Board also requires 2 hours of coursework on laws, regulations, and ethics and 4 hours of life support for the health professional

What is the CERS Approval Process?
Continuing education sponsors must submit a completed application. Completed continuing education course applications are submitted to the CERS Review Board and are evaluated according to the California PT Code of Regulations Title 16, Division 13.2 Article 13, 1399.90 - 1399.94.

If your application is incomplete, you will be notified and will have 30 days to submit the missing information.

How long does the CERS approval process take?
A standard review of your continuing education course application will take up to 30 days from the receipt of your completed application. You will be notified by email as to the status of your course approval.

You may request an expedited review for an additional fee of $50.00. Expedited reviews will be completed within 14 days from the receipt of your completed continuing education course application.

What is the CERS refund policy for submitted applications?
Once a continuing education course application is submitted and the payment is processed, there will be no cancellation or refund of the fees.

Do you approve courses retroactively?
Yes, courses can be approved retroactively as long as the course meets the record retention requirements of 1399.96

How long is an approval valid?
CE course approvals are valid for 1 or 2 years depending on which fee you paid during your initial application. Continuing education course approvals are based on a calendar year and are valid from January 1 through December 31 for either 1 or 2 years. A new application must be submitted once the course expires.

How do I Read My CERS Approval Number?
CERS #10-10001-1. This course was approved in 2010 was issued # 10001. It is valid for 1 year.

CERS #10-10002-2. This course was approved in 2010 was issued # 10002. It is valid for 2 years.

How do we document our provider status on course certificates?
CE course approval numbers must be indicated on the certificate of completion.

What can I do if our course is not approved?
If the Review Committee denies an application, you will be afforded 30 days to correct the issue(s) noted. Once this is corrected, the application will be re-sent to the Review Committee for reconsideration.
